Gaithersburg Library upgrade and expansion underway in Maryland

Construction is underway on the $25.6 million refurbishment and expansion of the Gaithersburg Library in Gaithersburg, Maryland, US.

The project is being developed by Gaithersburg-based Henley Construction Company. Work will involve creation of an additional 27,745 gross square feet on the main level along the front, back, and sides of the library covering a total area of 33,726 gross square feet. There will also be creation of a partial second level spanning about 7500 gross square feet. Among the various features of the partial second floor are an elevator, meeting rooms, mechanical rooms, storage, as well as Gilchrist Centre's satellite office.

The current building will be gutted as part of the project. The HVAC, lighting, electrical, plumbing, and security system, along with fire alarm, communications, roof and windows will be substituted. The restrooms of the building will receive an overhaul to comply with accessibility standards. Further, there will be reconfiguration of the interior area, expansion of the program zone for children’s services and young adult services, and expansion of the space for Internet computers and customer WIFI access.

The revamped facility will also feature a computer lab, media preview area, and program room. The parking area will be repaved with new storm water management amenities being installed. The shelving in the renovated facility will be lowered to facilitate access to the displayed items. The upgraded building will also be equipped with new furniture pieces near electric outlets to ease individual personal computers and internet access. There will further be installation of extra lounge chairs, reading tables, and reading chairs following the facelift.

The improved library will sport additional group study rooms, a computer lab, ergonomic service desks for staff, and extra internet PCs in a particular space. The book browsing and homework section of the children will undergo expansion while a dedicated programme room will be linked to the children’s room. There will also be a special designated space to park strollers. In addition, the facility will upgrade its interior and exterior lighting fixtures, incorporate security cameras, and will be zoned for climate control. The redesigned library will abide by LEED Silver standards.

Work is slated to be completed by early 2013.
